German Phrases and Daily Expressions

They are more important in day to day conversation.

  • Good day! = Guten Tag!
  • Good morning! = Guten Morgen!
  • Good evening! = Guten Abend!
  • Good night! = Gute Nacht!
  • Welcome / You are welcome = Willkommen / Bitte schön
  • Hello! = Hallo!
  • How are you? = Wie geht’s?
  • I’m (not) doing well = Mir geht’s (nicht) gut
  • Thank you! / Thank you very much! = Danke! / Vielen Dank!
  • Happy Birthday = Gute zum Geburtstag
  • Merry Christmas = Fröhliche weihnachten

The German alphabet has 30 letters (26 from English) + 4 Umlaut (ä, ö, ü and β).

Note:

  • j has the sound of y in German. for example in wirting the word is Ja but in speaking sound is ya which means yes.
  • v has the sound of f in German. for example in wirting the word is vier but in speaking sound is fear which means 4.
  • w has the sound of v in German. for example in wirting the word is wiederholen but in speaking sound is veederholen which means repeat.
  • z has the sound of s in German. for example in wirting the word is zwanzig but in speaking sound is swansish which means 20.
  • no word begin with β and it has the sound of sss.

Numbers

  • 0 = null
  • 1 = eins
  • 2 = zwei
  • 3 = drei
  • 4 = vier
  • 5 = fünf

In English thirteen becomes drei-zhen in German and sound will be drei-et-cyn.
